english films vocabulary

How to talk about films like a native speaker!

One of the best topics for small talk is films because pretty much everyone watches films and it’s a safe topic, not too personal. Below are 5 common film genres. Have a read and think about:

  • if you know a film like the one being described
  • if you can understand the vocabulary in bold from the context

For a comedy:

I watched XXX at the weekend. Have you seen it? Oh, it’s hilariousI laughed until my sides hurt! The plot is a bit weak I guess. The critics slated it but I would definitely recommend it if you want something fun and light-hearted.

For a horror/thriller:

I watched XXX at the weekend. Have you seen it? Oh my goodness, it’s so goryI had to watch from behind a cushion most of the time. The storyline is absolutely gripping though. I was on the edge of my seat right until the big twist at the end. It’s definitely worth watching!

For a ‘rom-com’:

I watched XXX at the weekend. Have you seen it? Ah, it’s lovely. It stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan and basically they play a couple destined to fall in love. It’s a bit predictable I suppose but it’s heart-warming and one for the whole family.

For a sci-fi film:

I watched XXX at the weekend. Have you seen it? Ugh, I wouldn’t bother if I were youThe special effects are amazing but that’s all it’s got going for it. The acting is horrendous and the storyline is non-existent. People are raving about it, but it doesn’t live up to the hype, trust me!

For a drama:

I watched XXX at the weekend. Have you seen it? Oh, it’s soooo good. It’s based on a true story and it’s set in Spain in the 80s. Watch it with the subtitles though because it’s much better like that than dubbed. It’s really movingI couldn’t stop thinking about it for days. I might buy the soundtrack too.
