Your English learning style

Finding your language learning style

When it comes to learning a language, we all have different learning styles. It’s definitely beneficial to know which type of English learner you are so that you can find out what works for you.

Usually we have a preference between these 4 styles:How do I learn English?

  • Visual – We like to see it
  • Auditory – We like to hear it
  • Reading & Writing – We like to write it down
  • Kinesthetic – We like to do it

If you can identify which type of learner you are, it will help you to choose activities which speed up the English learning process for you.

For example, if you are a visual learner, you should ask your English teacher to write new vocabulary on the whiteboard for you, or you might find handouts and information sheets useful. Visually pleasing websites will help you too.
If you are an auditory learner, then podcasts, YouTube clips and other recordings will be the best way to learn. Ask people to repeat English words for you and sound them out.
If you learn by reading and writing, then buy yourself a notebook and some coloured pens and organise your English vocabulary that way. You may find that sticking post-its to household items helps you to remember the names of things around your house.
If you are a kinesthetic learner, then roleplays are a fantastic way for you to learn English. You can also try cutting up English sentences or words and then rearranging them into the correct order.

You may already know which type of learner you are from my descriptions above but, if not, you can take an online quiz.  There are lots on the internet – just search ‘VARK learning styles’. Here is one I found which you can translate to your language if it’s too tricky in English.
